How to Travel Green

by G Man - September 22nd, 2009

here has been a lot of talk about global warming lately - second only to the economy.
We now know that the environment is in dire need of critical help, our survival depends upon it.

The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 to set mandates and CO2 limitations for participating nations. Although the United States is a majority contributor of these gases, the U.S. government has not agreed to the regulations set forth in the Kyoto Protocol. Of the many factors listed as contributors to greenhouse gases, air traffic is a major one. According to the Better World club, the average domestic U.S. airline flight releases more than 1,700 pounds per person of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

I still like to travel, and cant get enough of it, I try to do so responsibly. There are actions we can take, especially when at home, to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are being released into the environment. These small reductions, can add up to make a major difference.

When it comes to flying, your options are limited unless your willing to try a jet suit or hot air balloon. A key component of the Kyoto Protocol is the notion of offsets and carbon credits. This allows the reduction to be based as a whole, not on an individual level.  One of the things you can do is offset the amount of emissions produced by airplanes by purchasing a “carbon offset.” There are several companies which provide this service, it feels good and it’s not expensive.

While you’re at home there are a myriad of things one can easily do to help reduce our negative impact. It all starts with reduce, reuse and recycle. Reduce waste, reuse items like glass containers, bottles and cups and recycle wherever possible. Try grouping your errands together to save time, energy and gasoline. Consider walking or riding your bike to work or to simply run a quick errand. Keep in mind lights, water and other electrical components when leaving a room, shut them off.

The energy consumption involved with delivering non-local food to market is astronomical. Try to shop and eat locally grown, organic food. The shorter the distance food has to travel to your plate, the fewer greenhouse gases are emitted. Eating locally usually means better, fresher food and is a great way to experience the local culture and its scene. Living in New Jersey means tons of farm fresh foods and when I travel Guide to New Orleans, tons of Gumbo.

We need at least half the U.S. population to take the steps needed in order to reduce the U.S. emissions targets to the levels that were established by the Kyoto Protocol. 20% below 1990 levels.

Happy, Safe, Green and Ready Travels to you.

10 Tips for Choosing Green Cleaning Chemicals
This article is written by Steve Hanson

Many cleaning companies are making the switch to green cleaning chemicals. But with so many products on the market these days, how do you know which ones are truly “green”? Here are some recommendations on what to look for when choosing green cleaners.

1. Is the product certified by Green Seal®? Green Seal® is highly regarded in the industry and provides science-based environmental certification standards for green cleaning products.

2. Is the product non-toxic? Look for products that are non-toxic to humans and aquatic life.

3. Is the product biodegradable? Biodegradable means that it can be broken down by microbial action. The longer it takes to break down, the more harmful it is to the environment. Check the label to see if it says it’s biodegradable.

4. Is the product concentrated or ready-to-use? Ready-to-use cleaners are composed of 90% water, which means extra energy and packaging went into making this product. And extra packaging means extra solid waste ending up in our landfills. Concentrated product however, uses very little water and less packaging, which is much more environmentally friendly. It also cuts down on weight, which means less cost associated with the fuel needed to transport product to its final destination.

5. Does the product work in cold water? Using cold water saves energy, whereas the need for using hot water with the chemical uses more energy.

6. Does the product contain chlorine bleach? The wastewater after using a product containing chlorine bleach can react with other chemicals, which can be toxic.

7. Is the product derived from petroleum? Petroleum-based solvents are made from non-renewable resources, they are flammable, and can be toxic when inhaled. It’s better to use solvents derived from pine oil or citrus because they’re considered renewable resources.

8. Is the product an aerosol? Aerosol bottles can be dangerous if punctured, as they may produce an uncontrolled spray, which can put you at risk of exposure.

9. Is the product neutral in pH? Neutral pH products are safer for the environment and end user. Acidic or alkaline products can burn if accidentally spilled on your skin. A pH of 7.0 is considered neutral.

10. Is the packaging made from recycled products? Many containers and cardboard boxes are made from “postconsumer” materials.

Once you’ve decided to make the switch to green cleaning productsHealth Fitness Articles, use this list as your guide for making the right choices.

Everyone Can Find a Way to be GREEN

Go Green With Your Business Promoting
This article is written and owned by Gareth Parkin

Everyone is concerned about the effects of global warming and protecting our environment, and avoiding the dangers posed by the continued abuse of the environment.  Individuals and businesses are finding ways to be more environmentally conscious especially when it comes to promotional products. The buzzword on being proactive for the environment is Green.

Go green with your business promoting. Show your customers that you are as concerned about conserving natural resources and protecting the environment as they are. Show them your willingness to do your part to reduce the amount of waste you create that ends up in land fills and adds further harm to natural resources and our environment.

No one who is in business would argue against the need for you to promote your business to be successful. They are under the same pressure as you to promote their businesses well in order to be successful and prosperous. Promotional mugs are the perfect and affordable way to promote your business while also demonstrating the green consciousness of your business.

The trees which filter pollutants from the air are cut down in disastrous numbers to make paper products like paper cups for coffee drinkers. Saplings are planted to replace the trees that are cut down to make paper and other products but it can take many years for a sapling to reach full maturity. Meanwhile, our environment is further compromised by pollutants because there are not enough mature trees to filter these pollutants from the air.

The rubbish created by paper products leeches unwanted manufacturing chemicals into soil and groundwater. It also overwhelms municipal resources for the retrieval and disposal of that rubbish. That is certainly not a green activity by today’s standards. Trees are not cut down for use in the making of promotional mugs. Go green in the name of saving vital tree numbers, making less rubbish that needs disposing of, and in the name of promoting your business in the best light. Do this by offering your customers and employees the better- for -the -environment alternative to paper cups for drinking coffee. Give them promotional mugs to drink their java from.

Promote your business in the glowing green light of integrity and customer respect with promotional mugs. You may be surprised to learn, but promotional mugs are actually a very affordable way to promote your business with. You can get ceramic, glass, and metal, promotional mugs for business promoting and gifting at very low prices. Rest assured that the low prices of these promotional mugs are not a reflection of their quality. On the contrary, these promotional mugs are made only with the most durable and highest quality materials.

Promotional mugs can promote your business beyond your customers. Promotional mugs can generate prospects for your business, and encourage them to consider you first when looking for the goods or services provided by your business. Promotional mugs are not difficult to tote around with you to give away when the possibility for earning a new prospect for your business pops up. A promotional conference bag would be perfect for toting your promotional mugs with you where you go. A promotional conference bad promotes your business even before you give a promotional mug to someone to take home. They also permit enough added space to carefully wrap and protect your promotional mugs.  Go green with your business promoting. Become environmentally proactive by using promotional mugs in place a paper drinking cups. This will show your customers your concern for the environment and your willingness to help protect it. Use promotional mugs to successfully promote your business the green way and an increase in greenbacks will find their way into your financial account.

The Phantom Energy Drain

by G Man - March 29th, 2009

All the power wasted while computers are sitting idle overnight adds up, and one study has finally tried to measure it. The tally: An estimated $2.8 billion wasted on excess energy costs each year in the U.S. alone.

On a CO2 basis, that’s 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by 4 million cars on the road.

But big numbers like that become almost meaningless in an era of trillion-dollar bailouts, so to put the wasted energy in perspective, the study provides the data in terms you can better understand: If you run a company with 1,000 PCs left on overnight, you can save about $28,000 a year if they are turned off after hours. That’s not chump change.

Of course, it’s also a fact that your PC will function better if you restart it regularly, and nightly shutdowns can help you avoid having to suddenly reboot in the middle of the day when you’d otherwise be productive. So even though this little laptop, by my math, eats up only about a quarter’s worth of power overnight, maybe it’s a smart idea — and ultimately a time-saver, too — to shut it down after hours after all.

Small Business can Go Green Too

by G Man - February 22nd, 2009

Small businesses can support this worthy cause and grow eco-profits as well.

This article is writen by Ruth Klein

The world of big business is making daily headlines by “going green” after discovering that what’s good for the planet is also proving good for business.

IBM recently announced “Project Big Green,” a $1 billion initiative to reduce energy consumption
by offering new lines of energy-efficient IT products.

Wal-Mart is adding solar power to more than 20 stores.

PepsiCo is buying renewable energy certificates to offset its carbon footprint. Even major banks and energy firms are being asked by shareholders to prove that they, too, are going green.

It’s not just the biggest businesses that are attracting new customers and shareholders and reaping huge profits by “going green.” Small businesses also are growing eco-profits by embracing surprisingly inexpensive strategies to add value to their products, services and brand.

Consider these innovative examples:

- Bob Smith of Mad River Brewing Company in Blue Lake, California, has attracted positive publicity (and new customers) by promoting his efforts to reduce his small firm’s waste output and take other environmentally conscious steps. In turn, he has received welcome positive publicity from the press. “What PR budget? That is our PR budget,” he told the Albuquerque Tribune about “going green” to market his business.

- In Florida, Natalie Kelly formed Home Therapy Cleaning Services, which uses only nontoxic, all-natural cleaning products for her home cleaning business. She used to sell aromatherapy candles from her home, she told the St. Petersburg Times, but today uses an aromatherapy baking soda blend to freshen carpets.

Here’s what you can do:

- Two inexpensive ways any small business
or solo entrepreneur can go green are to change light bulbs to energy-efficient bulbs and use biodegradable cleaning products.

- With that done, tell your customers and the media about these simple ways to go green. You will have just earned instant credibility as a green business, and also as a media resource for simple, effective ways to “go green.”

- Many communities online and offline are forming networks to exchange energy-saving ideas for home and business. Form your own energy network, enlisting neighborhood businesses that will welcome another opportunity to show they’re going green, too. The plus for you is that you will have just positioned yourself and your business as a community environmental leader.

- Copy what the New York Times called “Phase 2″ of the corporate response to global warming. Partner with an environmental group. Travelocity invites customers to donate an extra $10 to $40, which goes to the Conservation
Fund to plant trees to offset the carbon used by a client to take a trip. Whole Foods invites customers to buy a $5 “wind power card” that goes to Renewable Choice Energy to build wind farms. What local environmental group can you partner with to promote on your Web site (and vice versa), to set aside a day that a percentage of profits will go to that organization or to make their fliers available at your business?

- Make use of readily available, free information to hand out with your business literature or to make available in your office. For example, create a one-page flier on your letterhead inviting clients to calculate their own carbon footprint by visiting http://multimedia.wri.org/safeclimate_calculator.cfm.

- Go deeper green! Attend a “green” conference in your community or regionArticle Search, and promote your attendance. (Go to Google.com and type in “green” and “conference” and your area to find out when and where they are scheduled.) Write a “green” article on simple ways you are going green and submit it to one of the dozens of “green” Web sites and blogs that invite reader contributions. It’s a great way to market your smart ideas and your business!

Save Green By Going Green

by G Man - January 22nd, 2009

Here are a few tips to be greener and save green along the way.

1- Don’t preheat the oven. Unless making pastries or baking, don’t preheat the oven. Just place your tray in the oven and peak through the window as opposed to opening the oven.

2- Don’t Rinse. No need to rinse dishes when using a dishwasher. Skip this and save up to 20 gallons of water per load!

3- Recycle and Re-Use glass. Recycled glass reduces air pollution by 20% or more and related water pollution by as much as 50%. Also- re-use glass containers to store food, much healthier than plastics.

4-Hang Dry. Gas and Electric dryers make clothes look worn and use lots of energy. Run a clothes line in your backyard and let your clothes blow in the breeze, they will appear new- longer, smell fresher and your clothes will last longer.

5-Go vegetarian. Replace one beef meal with One vegetarian meal per week and we will save 2500 gallons of water it takes to produce just one pound of meat.
